THE MOST HIGH GOD OF THE BIBLE

The Most High God of the Bible created the heavens, the earth, and all life. This God made Himself known to the human race by communicating to many Hebrew prophets through direct encounters, through visions, through prayer and through supernatural events. These prophets in turn, spoke God’s message to their respective audiences, and some prophets were authors of the books in the Bible. This same God who spoke through the prophets of the Old Testament (Hebrew Tanakh ), spoke through Jesus the Christ and his apostles in the New Testament.

One of the earliest names used to describe this Creator-God was “The Most High God.” It was used by both Abraham and Melchizedek circa 2000 BCE. Both of them were surrounded at that time by the polytheistic regional gods and goddesses of the Mesopotamian and Chaldean people groups, and the term, The Most High God, was a contrasting witness to the One, True, Creator-God who had revealed Himself to each of them.

Later, during the time of Moses, this same God revealed and identified Himself with the names: “I Am the I Am,” “YHWH,” “The God of Abraham-Isaac-and Jacob,” And to later prophets, God used many names that describe His essence: “I am the Beginning and the End,” I am the Rock,” “I am the Lord, there is no other”,” “I am the Maker of All things,” “The Holy One of Israel.” “I am the Lord your God.”

What follows in this blog are six summary statements which describe the One True God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the Most High God of Abraham. Beneath each statement are the supporting verses taken from the Bible. The reference for each verse is included so you can look up each verse in the Bible. Ever wonder why the human race has had so many gods and godesses?  By definition there can only be one “supreme being.”  So how, and when did all these other gods and godesses come about? The following is a discussion of the Most High God and the false gods of antiquity.

The Bible is very clear about the Most High God and the false gods of antiquity. It states that at one time in the distant past, mankind worshiped the only True, and the Most High God,  Creator of the Universe. But as the years went by, mankind chose to forget the Most High God, and invented and worshiped new gods which they imagined and created. And soon there came to be thousands of gods and godesses for every perceived human need, spanning the centuries and cultures. The Most High God permitted mankind to follow its own desires and imaginations, and the result was a mixture of false religion and moral depravity (think temple prostitution as a current example). The consequence of this rejection of the Most High God, was that mankind and individuals, “professing themselves to be wise, became fools,” (Romans 1), and false gods were worshiped in every culture.

Into this widespread polytheism, the Most High God revealed Himself to at least two individuals. One was Melchizedek, King of Salem, and the other was Abraham, whose family had worshiped polytheistic deities in Ur of the Chaldees (ancient Babylon).

About 2000 BC:

           “Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine.
              He was priest of God Most High,  and he blessed Abram,
              saying:

                      ““Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven
                           and earth.  And praise be to God Most High, who
                           delivered your enemies into your hand.””

               Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”    Genesis 14

And beginning with Abraham, the Most High God began to reveal His plan for all mankind, a plan that would extend divine favor to the whole world.

A Comparison of the Most High God and the gods of Antiquity:

1.   A god represented by a man-made figure, in human or animal form, is a false god. The Most High God of the Bible is Spirit and is not visible, and therefore cannot be represented by any man-made statue or figure.

 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”  John 4:23

2.  A god who is also considered a distant ancestor of humans is a false god. The Most High God of the Bible is Infinite, outside of Time and Space. We humans are part of God’s creation, finite individuals.

“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker,
    those who are nothing but potsherds
    among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,
    ‘What are you making?’ ” Isaiah 45:9

3,  A god who is the deification of the Sun, Moon or Earth is a false God because finite human beings were responsible for the deifying, the making of an object into a god. The Most High God of the Bible is self-existing, the Beginning and the End.

“This is what the Lord says—
Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;
apart from me there is no God.”   Isaiah 44:6

4,  A god who does not predict future human events and cause them to happen is a false god. The Most High God of the Bible predicts certain future events that are part of his plan for humanity, and the predicted events happen.

“I am the Lord; that is my name!
I will not yield my glory to another
or my praise to idols.
See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you.” Isaiah 42:8

5,  A god who does not personally claim to be the sole creator and sustainer of all that exists, is a false god. The Most High God of the Bible claims to be the sole creator of heaven and earth, the universe.

“This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it”  Isaiah 42:5

6,  A god who is associated with the Sun, the Moon, planets, etc., is a false god created by finite humans who were in awe of the Earth and objects in the heavens. The Most High God of the Bible claims responsibility for creating the whole universe.

“Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any. They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know that they may be ashamed.”  Isaiah 44:8-9

7,  A god who exists or existed only within a certain culture, or only for a period of human history, is a false god. The Most High God of the Bible exists from eternity past to eternity future, and transcends all cultures of the world.

“Listen to me, Jacob,
    Israel, whom I have called:
I am he;
    I am the first and I am the last.
13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth,
    and my right hand spread out the heavens;
when I summon them,
    they all stand up together.”  Isaiah 48:12

8,  A god who has never initiated contact with the human family through a human spokesperson is a false god. The Most High God took the initiative in revealing Himself to Abraham, Moses, and the Jewish prophets. False gods are silent, and humans must invent activities in hopes of communicating with them.  Religious activities such as rituals, offerings to appease and self mutilation are associated with false gods.

“God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners,
spoke in times past unto the fathers by the prophets,
has in these last days spoken to us by the Son.”  Hebrews 1:1

9,  A god who exists along with other gods as a family or a consortium of gods, is a false god. By definition there can only be a single Supreme Being and the Most High God of the Bible claims to be that One.

“This is what the Lord says—
Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;
apart from me there is no God.”  Isaiah 43:6

“For there is One God and One Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,”
1 Timothy 2:5
